In Depression-era Kansas, a fast-talking Bible salesman (Ryan O'Neal) reluctantly takes on a nine-year-old girl (Tatum O'Neal, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress) as his traveling companion—and discovers she might be the better con artist. Peter Bogdanovich's delightful, perfectly cast comedy is shot in rich black-and-white by Laszlo Kovacs and brimming with period atmosphere. The father-daughter charm of the O'Neals, both on and off screen, gives the film an irresistible warmth beneath all the double-dealing.
