The Smile, comprising Radiohead members Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke with drummer Tom Skinner, debuted new songs from their second album, Wall of Eyes, while touring for A Light for Attracting Attention (2022). Unlike their earlier work with Nigel Godrich, Wall of Eyes was produced and mixed by Sam Petts-Davies, who also produced Yorke's Suspiria soundtrack (2018). The album was recorded at Greenwood's Oxfordshire home studio and Abbey Road Studios, with strings performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra. In March 2023, the band announced they were seven weeks into recording, with Greenwood noting the album explored the dynamics of a three-person band and ideas developed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
