The third and latest release from Blue Note by one of the greatest drummers in contemporary jazz, Kendrick Scott, is an ambitious, all-chordless trio! Following Kendrick Scott's 2019 release "A Wall Becomes A Bridge" with his band Oracle, this album is a trio featuring saxophonist Walter Smith III, a Houston native, and bassist Reuben Rogers. The band's playing is thrilling in a way that only chordless music can be. The album, which began with a request from Rio Sakairi, artistic director of The Jazz Gallery, a prominent event space in New York City, for its Artist Fellowship Series, includes eight original compositions and a Bobby Hutcherson composition (" Isn't This My Sound Around Me") and one new arrangement of a Bobby Hutcherson song. Of the album, which was created during the pandemic, Scott said, "I often write songs about things I've experienced, but with this album I wanted to zoom out from my point of view and instead put myself in everyone's perspective.Because the pandemic forced everyone to face the shadows they had been running from. And while the sound in my band Oracle is usually built around guitar and piano, I wondered what we could do aurally by taking those two instruments away. Reuben on bass navigates the world of the album in a pure and loving way, and Walter on saxophone always sounds beautiful and inspires me. He's always been a guiding light."
