Carle Angell, Toronto Symphony Orchestra
Description:
The sound quality has been greatly improved! He was invited to conduct the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Tanglewood Festival on August 17, 1968. Shortly thereafter, on August 20, 1968, the Russian army invaded Czechoslovakia (commonly known as the "Czech Incident"), and upon learning of this tragedy, Ančerl decided to abandon his return to Canada and became the permanent conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, succeeding Seiji Ozawa in the fall of 1969. This album contains live recordings with the Toronto Symphony immediately after his arrival in Canada, before and after his appointment as Permanent Conductor. Starting with the reliable and substantial "Eine Kleine," this 2-CD set includes Mendelssohn, Schumann, and two Beethoven pieces, all of which are highly enjoyable to listen to. The young Ozawa's precise performance was a far cry from the masterful, powerful sound and rich expressive power of the young Ozawa, which must have shown a new appeal to the Toronto audience of the time. The "Rural" from 1972 is also available in stereo. The Japanese-language commentary includes "Karel Ancier in Toronto" by Treminu, the owner of the Tara label. It details interesting facts such as the events before and after the Czech incident and the public's reaction to Ancier during his time in Toronto (there are some discrepancies in the timeline of the events, but we have included the book as is to respect the original).
