Pale Rider

The peace of a small mining community is shattered when Coy LaHood, the ruthless proprietor of a powerful strip-mining company, arrives to take control of the territory. Soon, a mysterious drifter called “Preacher” rides into town on a pale horse and allies himself with the struggling denizens in their fight against the invaders.

Director/star Clint Eastwood returns to the western as a mysterious stranger who helps the settlers of a small mining town overcome the oppression of a ruthless gold baron. Wearing a priest's collar and oddly half-remembered by many of the town's residents, Eastwood's stoic avenger-known only as "Preacher"-is seen by some as a savior who may be more than just a man. Michael Moriarty, Carrie Snodgress co-star.

The Wild Bunch

After a bloody holdup attempt at a railroad depot, a notorious gang of outlaws rides south to Mexico pursued by bounty hunters. The outlaws are led by Pike Bishop, a tough man weighed down by age, regret and the knowledge that his way of life is over. The bounty hunters are led by Deke Thornton, Pike’s former partner, who has been bailed out of jail by the railroad on condition that he bring back Pike, dead or alive.

Thornton would rather join Pike, but he gave his word. In Mexico, Pike’s gang takes a job stealing weapons to supply a Mexican war lord, but is this really the kind of work they want to do?

Rio Bravo

On one side is an army of gunmen dead-set on springing a murderous sidekick from jail. On the other is Sheriff John T. Chance and his two deputies: one a drunk, the other a cripple. Place your bets.John Wayne is Chance in Rio Bravo, a lean Westernclassic packing solid heroics and a strong emotional core. He's joined by Dean Martin as the deputy coming off a two-year drunk, Walter Brennan as the old coot whose spirit outmatches his hobbled stride.

Ricky Nelson as a youth out to prove himself and Angie Dickinson as the scarlet woman with her eye on Chance. Director Howard Hawks lifted the Western to new heights with Red River. Capturing the legendary West with a stellar cast in peak form, he does it again here.

The Searchers

Often cited as one of the most complex and greatest Westerns ever made, director John Ford's moody tale stars John Wayne as Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran who returns to his settler brother's West Texas home and finds that his family has been attacked by the Comanche.

Joined by a youth (Jeffrey Hunter) raised by the family, Edwards begins an all-consuming search for his surviving niece (Natalie Wood), now living with her captors. Ward Bond, Vera Miles also star; based on Alan Le May’s 1954 novel.
