George Smith Patton Jr. (1885 - 1945) was a US Army general who played a key role in developing the Army's armored warfare doctrine after World War I. During World War II, he commanded the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions at the start of the war, and led his troops to victory in North Africa in 1942. In 1943, he commanded the US Seventh Army during the Allied invasion of Sicily. After the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944, he commanded the Third Army in France and Germany.
